Steve Wilcox Benefit Fund

steve-wilcox1Steve Wilcox has Carcinoid Cancer. Following two surgeries and being on Chemotherapy since 2012, the last scans show that the tumors have grown in places that cannot be operated on. This type cancer does not respond to conventional chemotherapy. The next step is PRRT that is available in Europe (see www.prrtinfo.org). This specialized treatment has been performed in Europe for the past 20 years. The U.S. has one center that costs four times more per treatment than Europe plus they do not have the same level of expertise.

Steve will be going to Bad Berka, Germany on May 18th, 2014.

This is a radionucleide therapy that attaches radiation to a chemical that has an affinity for his cancer. They combine this and the chemical will take the radiation to his cancers to destroy them. Sometimes up to four treatments are required every three months depending on the tumor load. Steve’s tumors are in his lungs, behind his heart, around the pancreas and in his mid gut where all the blood vessels supplying his digestive tract are located. There are probably residual tumors in his liver which should show up on a specialized scan called a GA 28. Bad Berka, Germany has the newest scanner.
Bad Berka is a small town about the size of Hamilton but with an excellent reputation. Dr. Baum in Germany has a protocol that puts into account Steve’s tumor load, size and many other factors. The best we can hope for is a total cure; the second best is an additional 50 months.

Unfortunately, insurance will not cover this treatment whether it is in the U.S. or Europe. The cost per treatment is $10-14,000 depending on the current exchange rate. This does not include travel expenses.

Steve has stated he does not want or need help to cover his financial expenses, as there are many more people out there in more need than him. However there are several of us that want to help and felt that contributing to his treatment is a way to show our support and help relieve this huge financial burden.

Steve has dedicated his time over the years to many great causes including Ravalli County Search and Rescue. We want to help give back to a person who has given a lot to his community.
